Course Overview

This qualification reflects the role of workers in the community and/or residential setting who follow an individualised plan to provide person-centred support to people who may require support due to ageing, disability, or some other reason.

Work involves using discretion and judgement in relation to individual support as well as taking responsibility for own outputs. Workers have a range of factual, technical, and procedural knowledge, as well as some theoretical knowledge of the concepts and practices required to provide person-centred support.


Course Structure

The following units are included in this course, and all are required to complete 7 core units and 6 elective units for the award of the qualification. You can choose a specialisation for this qualification. 

Core

Elective (Ageing Specialisation)

Elective (Disability Specialisation)

Academic Entry Requirements

Have completed the equivalent of Year 12.


Participate in a course entry interview to determine suitability for the course and student needs. This will also include an LLN assessment and you must achieve ACSF 4 for reading, writing, numeracy and oral communication to enter the course.

Minimum Age to Apply Applicant must be 18 years of age or older. 
Language Requirement
IELTS Score (Minimum)

Have an IELTS score of 5.5 (test results must be no more than 2 years old)

Note that other English language tests such as PTE and TOEFL can be accepted. You are required to provide your results so that we can confirm they are equivalent to IELTS 5.5.


English Language Requirements English language competence can also be demonstrated through documented evidence of any of the following:
  • Educated for 5 years in an English-speaking country; or
  • Completed at least 6 months of a Certificate IV level course in an Australian RTO; or
  • Successful completion of an English Placement Test.

Career Opportunities

Potential employment options are as a as a direct support worker in aged care, disability, home and community care or other direct care work in the community services industry.

Internship or Work Placement

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 120 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of the units of competency.
