Course Overview

This is a trade qualification for carpenters in residential and commercial workplaces. It includes setting out, manufacturing, constructing, assembling, installing and repairing products made using timber and non-timber materials.

Course Structure

  2. Handle carpentry materials
  3. Carry out general demolition of minor building structures
  4. Carry out setting out
  5. Install flooring systems
  6. Construct and erect wall frames
  7. Construct ceiling frames
  8. Erect roof trusses
  9. Construct pitched roofs
  10. Construct eaves
  11. Install windows and doors
  12. Construct, assemble and install timber external stairs
  13. Install exterior cladding
  14. Install lining, panelling and moulding
  15. Read and interpret plans, specifications and drawings for carpentry work
  16. Erect and dismantle formwork for footings and slabs on ground
  17. Apply basic levelling procedures
  18. Erect and dismantle restricted height scaffolding
  19. Work safely at heights
  20. Carry out concreting to simple forms
  21. Work effectively and sustainably in the construction industry
  22. Conduct workplace communication
  23. Carry out measurements and calculations
  24. Perform construction calculations to determine carpentry material requirements

Entry Requirement

Admission Requirements
Minimum Age to Apply
  1. Be at least 18 years of age and have completed Year 12 or equivalent.
  2. Participate in a course entry interview to determine suitability for the course and student needs
Language Requirement
IELTS Score (Minimum) Have an IELTS* score of 6.0 (test results must be no more than 2 years old). English language competence can also be demonstrated through documented evidence of any of the following:
  1. Educated for 5 years in an English-speaking country;
  2. or completed at least 6 months of a Certificate IV level course in an Australian RTO;
  3. or successful completion of an English Placement Test

*Note that other English language tests such as PTE and TOEFL can be accepted. Students are required to provide their results so that it can be confirmed they are equivalent to IELTS 6.0.
