AFTT’s Diploma of Live Production and Technical Services (Stage Management) will equip you with the core skills of a stage manager, and the relevant exposure to technical roles meeting the diverse needs of the contemporary theatre production industry. The fifteen (15) units of competency have been carefully chosen to reflect the dynamic and changing Theatre Production Industry, and to ensure our students are equipped with the knowledge and experience to navigate successful careers in the industry.  Our holistic assessment strategy allows each student to apply the skills and knowledge across a range of projects and theatre productions.

Tier 1: The Craft of Theatre Production

Tier 1 offers students a thorough grounding in the underpinning knowledge and practical application of the Theatre Production work place, with a range of theory classes, practical activities in theatre and screen productions. The learning structure allows the student to participate in simulated workplace activities in the roles of Technical Operator, Production Assistant and Assistant Stage Manager. This allows for the development of skills and knowledge in areas such as; theatre production documentation, lighting design implementation, theatre history, technical theory, risk management, stage management, running a rehearsal room, working in a production environment with professional directors, designers and actors, culminating in practical experience on theatre productions. 


Tier 2: Theatre Production at Work 

Tier 2 builds on the skills and knowledge from Tier 1 and extends these into a range of practical applications, allowing the student to demonstrate competency in a range of supervisory roles within a theatrical context, including Stage Manager and Technical Supervisor. Students will work alongside industry professionals such as Directors, Lighting Designers, Choreographers, Actors, Production Managers, Stage Managers and Technical Managers to collaborate, plan, supervise, implement and realise all elements of a theatrical production. This tier introduces the discipline of managing and organising film locations and shoots, resulting in allowing the student to demonstrate their skills within this media.

Entry Requirement

Language Requirement
IELTS Score (Minimum) Proof of English proficiency: minimum IELTS 5.5 overall (with no single band score below 5.0) or equivalent. Please see English Language Requirements for more information.

Career Opportunities

By the time you graduate you will have the confidence to work on a range of productions and events such as The Lion King or an Olympic Opening Ceremony, or on more intimate productions such as an independent small-scale plays or street performances. You will be able to explore a range of opportunities within the live production industry.


Previous graduates with strong stage management skills now work on professional productions such as: Hamilton, Ghost The Musical, Rent, and The Lion King, and with companies such as Belvoir St. Theatre, Sport For Jove, The Ambassadors Theatre Group (ATG) and Disney. Within the events and festival industries our graduates have enjoyed employment opportunities with Destination NSW, Love Busk, NRL ceremonies and Sydney Festival.
