The Graduate Diploma in TESOL meets the professional development needs of a wide range of English language teachers and educators teaching people of all ages. It caters for students seeking an initial teaching qualification in teaching English to adult speakers of other languages. It is also well suited to applicants who already possess a teaching qualification and wish to gain a specialist degree in the field as they are eligible for credit recognition.

Course Structure

The Graduate Diploma in TESOL is structured as follows:

Trimester One

  1. TSL700 Language Teaching Methodologies
  2. TSL701 Linguistics for Language Teaching
  3. TSL702 Learning an Additional Language
  4. TSL704 TESOL Curriculum Development

Trimester Two

  1. TSL713 Research Methods of TESOL
  2. TSL705 Language Testing and Assessment
  3. TSL718 TESOL Practicum
  4. TESOL Elective

Students may choose from the following electives:

  1. TSL706 New Technologies and New Literacies in Language Teaching
  2. TSL709 Literature and Language Teaching 
  3. TSL711 Intercultural Communication
  4. TSL712 English for Academic and Specific Purposes 
  5. TSL716 Sociolinguistics and Language Teaching
  6. TSL717 Computer-assisted Language Learning and Teaching in a TESOL Classroom

Academic Entry Requirements
Australian Bachelor degree (3 years) (AQF Level 7)
or overseas equivalent.
Minimum Age to Apply KOI does not enrol students under 18 years of age.
Language Requirement
IELTS Score (Minimum) Minimum overall score of 7.0 with no band less than 6.5

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Graduate Diploma of TESOL may find employment opportunities locally or overseas teaching English as a second or foreign language, in ELICOS programs (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students) and the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP).
