Introduction of the Genuine Student Criterion

Are you contemplating pursuing your studies in Australia? If the idea has crossed your mind, it's important to be aware that alterations to the student visa application process have been disclosed by the Australian government, slated for implementation starting March 23, 2024, with further revisions anticipated later in the year.  After the discussion of the Australian Government with the education sector representatives, a new GS Requirement was implemented. The recent modifications are designed to pinpoint international students who genuinely seek quality education in Australia, with no intention of migrating in the future.

Instead of the previous 300-word statement on the student visa application form, targeted questions will now be introduced. These questions aim to offer a comprehensive portrayal of the student to visa decision-makers.

The New Genuine Student Requirement

Previously, international students were mandated to fulfill the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) assessment, which validated their sincere intention to pursue high-quality education in Australia. This evaluation encompassed a questionnaire, a 300-word personal statement, and occasionally, an interview.

Effective March 23, 2024, Australia's student visa evaluation procedure will integrate the new Genuine Student requirement (GS). Consequently, applicants are no longer obligated to furnish a 300-word statement. Rather, the application process will incorporate the completion of targeted questions.

GS Requirement Questions will cover

The latest Genuine Student (GS) requirement in Australia will center on crafting a more transparent and individualized evaluation of each student's intentions and circumstances. Presented below are examples of questions that comprise the Genuine Student requirement:

• Details of your current circumstances, including ties to family, community, employment and economic circumstances.
• Why you chose your course and why you chose Australia as your study destination. 
• How you will benefit from studying your chosen course. 
• Details of your study history in Australia (if any).
• If you are holding a visa other than a Student visa, you will need to give reasons for applying for a Student visa.
• Any other relevant information that you'd like to provide. 

The Student visa declaration has also changed. It requires you to confirm that you:

• Understand what it means to be a genuine student
• Have read, understand and commit to comply with student visa conditions and to notify the Department of Home Affairs if your circumstances change.
• Understand that while post-study pathways to permanent migration are available, only a limited number of graduates will be eligible.
