Global

When people think about studying in Australia, they often imagine the classes, the lifestyle, the beaches… But there’s something else that becomes part of your life very quickly: finding a job, and not just any job — your first job in Australia.

Why casual jobs matter (especially at the beginning)

For most international students, the first job isn’t about passion or career. It’s about: paying rent, covering groceries, learning how things work, getting your first local experience

Because here’s the reality:  your first job opens the door to everything else and most of the time, that first job is… simple. But necessary.

1. Supermarkets

Places like Coles, Woolworths or Aldi regularly hire students. Typical roles: checkout operator, night fill, store assistant.

These jobs are great if you want:

✔️ stable hours

✔️ structured shifts

✔️ a more predictable routine

2. Fast food chains

Big brands like McDonald’s, Hungry Jack’s, KFC, are constantly hiring.

Why students choose them:

✔️flexible shifts

✔️no experience needed

✔️fast hiring process

3. Cafés & restaurants (hospitality - for this one you will need to have your RSA - contact us for more information and special promo)

This is one of the most common industries for students. Roles include: kitchen hand, waiter, barista , dishwasher.

💡 Tip: walking in with your CV still works here

 4. Warehouses

A lot of students start here too. Typical roles: picker packer, sorting parcels, stock handling.

Usually found through agencies.

These jobs are:

✔️physical

✔️early morning or night shifts

✔️good for consistent income

5. Cleaning jobs

Not glamorous — but very common. Work includes: offices, hotels, shopping centres.

Why students choose it:

✔️evening shifts (perfect for study schedule)

✔️easy and good money entry

✔️stable demand

6. Food delivery (very popular)

One of the easiest jobs to start in Australia: Uber Eats, DoorDash,

Why it works:

✔️flexible hours

✔️quick onboarding

✔️no boss / work independently

7. Other options (less talked about)

Some students also work in: childcare / babysitting, retail stores, customer service roles,

temporary projects (like events or even census jobs). Australia regularly offers casual roles with flexible hours, which fit student life

One honest truth no one tells you: Your first job in Australia… probably won’t be your dream job. And that’s okay. Because it’s not meant to be. Most students go through the same stage: applying everywhere, getting rejected, starting somewhere simple, slowly building, experience and then suddenly… the second job is easier, the third job is better, opportunities start to open.

What really matters it’s not where you start. It’s that you start. Because once you have local experience, references, confidence, everything changes.

✨ Final thought

Studying in Australia is not just about what you learn in class, it’s also about adapting, working, figuring things out, building your life step by step. And sometimes… that journey starts stacking shelves, making coffee, or delivering food.
