Course Overview

When a customer arrives with an accident damaged vehicle the first job of a panel beater is to identify the parts of the frame and bodywork that have been affected, assess the extent of the damage and provide the customer with an estimate of the time and cost required to repair it.
A panel beater will then repair any scratches and dents on the body work (using panel beating techniques, such as planishing and body filling), replace any damaged parts, straighten and align the frame or unibody and, finally carryout refinishing and repainting.

Course Structure

This course has 30 units of competency taught over a time period of 5 semesters. The following topics will be taught:

  • Remove and store vehicle body components
  • Repair adhesive bonded structural damage on vehicles
  • Repair procedures
  • Remove, replace and align bolt on vehicle body panels and components
  • Repair vehicle body panels using filler
  • Oxyacetylene thermal heating and cutting on vehicle body sections
  • Remove and replace major welded panels on vehicles
  • Advanced gas metal arc welding on body sections
  • Repair vehicle chassis, frame and associated components
  • Remove and replace adhesive attached components on vehicles
  • Remove and install moveable body glass
  • Remove and replace vehicle head lining
  • Repair vehicle thermoplastic body panels and components
  • Non-structural vehicle panel repairs
  • Repair vehicle body panels using metal finishing
  • Repair vehicle aluminium body panels without the use of body filler
  • Spot welding

Academic Entry Requirements

Completion of Year 12 (or equivalent in the student’s home country.

Students who have not completed Year 12 (or equivalent) must have relevant work experience or a qualification that indicates a likely success of course completion.

There are no pre-requisites for the Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology

IELTS 5.5 with no band below 5.0

Alternatively, students are required to take a English pre-test prior to enrolment
